McCaul is Running Scared

by: Ted Ankrum

Wed Feb 24, 2010 at 11:04 AM CST

( - promoted by Phillip Martin)

Many people in US House District 10 have received fund raising letters from incumbent Republican Michael McCaul.  They open with "I've been targeted by the National Democrats for defeat in 2010.  First, they recruited an Austin tech millionaire who raised more money than any challenger in the country, over $1 million in cash.  Now, they found an attack dog who professes that his one goal is to tear down my record, using the money from the millionaire to fund his initial efforts."  The letter goes on to highlight some of his "accomplishments"

That's really rich.  It looks like Rep McCaul would rather be running against another Washington-selected millionaire, rather than a candidate boosted by local grass-roots support.  I thank Jack for his $2400 to help make the filing fee, but I hardly think that falls in the category of big money; and many would think it only fair that he help when he dropped out with only a week before the filing deadline.  Those grass-roots volunteers have given enormous help getting up a website (www.ankrum2010.com)and ramping up a campaign from absolutely zero in a matter of weeks.

It's also great to be recognized by Rep. McCaul, this time.  I gladly accept his appelation of attack dog.  I'm going to be an attack dog for the interests of the people in his District--something he has been an abject failure at.  He starts off by making a virtue of necessity.  He says he isn't going to take any earmarks, when what he really means is that he can't get any earmarks because he is part of the "just say no" crowd.  Some earmarks are stupid, but many are the way a Representative gets needed projects in a District.  Does Rep. McCaul think that his constituents should just send their taxes to Washington, and get nothing in return?

He lauds his opposition to all of the bailout, economic stimulus, and banking regulation legislation.  The result: his District got 163 stimulus jobs, while LaMar Smith got 10,095 and Lloyd Doggett got 566.  Did his constituents not need the new regulations just imposed (belatedly) on the credit card companies?  Are his constituents able to eat ideology?

He touts his co-sponsorship of a bill to bar the VA from naming projects for sitting members of Congress.  This was aimed at John Murtha, who has been a great friend to the military and veterans, but it won't work, because John Murtha just died in a military hospital.  In the meanwhile, he remained silent when two VA Regional Clinics announced for his District (Katy and Tomball) went unfunded for four years.  It took a word by others to Democrat Representative Chet Edwards to put funding for these clinics into the budget and they will be up and runing in 2011.  Rep McCaul is just a vindictive showboat with no substance.

He didn't mention the 3000 direct jobs lost and several thousand other indirect jobs lost in his District at the tactical truck plant in Sealy, Texas; after it was revealed that he didn't lift a finger to advocate for his constituents.  This has been much discussed on these pages before and is just another indication that he is lazy, and not concerned with anything other than his reputation with the House Republican leadership.  Attack Dog--yes indeed.  He is a bad Representative, and I thank Jack McDonald and other concerned citizens in District 10 for allowing me to expose his lousy performance.  He certainly doesn't deserve to be unopposed.  So come on folks.  Visit my website and make a contribution so that this old dog can continue to attack!

Ted needs our help (0.00 / 0)
Ted has a powerful message that needs to be heard, a message that voters will respond to.  But it will only get heard if we can raise enough funds to pay for direct mail, for radio, and eventually for TV.  Go to Ted's website. Contribute at his Act Blue page. Write Ted a check.

Let's get District 10 a representative that we can be proud of.

Ted's Back and we are glad! (0.00 / 0)
Many of us have been on Ted's bandwagon since early in 2005 and we are glad that he is back.  We are all volunteers.  A volunteer (Kernan) put together a good website in a very short time.  We all lend our thoughts and ideas.  Have you seen McCaul?  I have only seen him twice and never talked to him because I was not close enough.  He never shows up in my part of the district - Austin.  Why is that?  Does not want to face the opposition?  Vote Ted and more importantly, CONTRIBUTE!  Time's awastin' to get our CD 10 back! -- DB

Aww, Mikey, is Ted scaring you? (0.00 / 0)
I daresay the Republican from the 10th Congressional District has plenty to be worried about.  Go, Ted!

Attack Dog? (0.00 / 0)
Congressman McCaul:  The only job he's fighting for is HIS OWN!

Don't default to the bastards!

Subj: McCaul Fundraising Letter

From: Ted Ankrum for Congress 2010

To: Media Outlets, open use

The Ankrum campaign team recently obtained copies of fundraising letters from our opponent, 3-term incumbent Congressman Michael McCaul (R-Westlake Hills). The remarks in the letter range from petty to desperate, as he pleas for more money to add to his campaign account, an account he raised almost $1,000,000 for - in the last quarter alone - to fight for "reform." It is clear that incumbent Congressman McCaul seems to think people aren't smart enough to see right past his diluted appeals.

Furthermore, his letter is misleading.  The Democrats in Washington haven't targeted him for defeat, as he claims.  In fact, they aren't involved at all.  The Ankrum campaign is on its' own - we are Texans running a campaign for other Texans.  Secondly, Austin tech millionaire Jack McDonald contributed for "initial efforts," and gave us just enough money to pay for a filing fee, so that McCaul, a multi-millionaire himself, did not get the benefit of running unopposed. Our campaign will admit that McCaul did get one thing right. Ted Ankrum is going to expose his record for what it really is: nothing.  If "attack dog" is how the incumbent wishes to describe the challenger, Ted Ankrum wears the label proudly; the citizens of the Tenth District deserve an attack dog to work for them. McCaul is an unremarkable, do-nothing Congressman who won't vote for any of our hard-earned tax dollars to come back to the district - he says it himself.  Which isn't surprising, considering he won't even try to maintain defense contracts that help employ thousands in the district either. Congressman McCaul talks about reform as if it is some banner that incumbents can wrap themselves in and fool voters with.  Voters, however, will not be fooled.

The unfortunate part of this fundraising letter is that the donors he is beholden to are paying attention too.  They are well funded and scared - scared that voters will finally see that six years of cronyism, inaction, and comfortable incumbency have allowed Washington to poison their Congressman.  They would be right.  Six years of broken promises & cozy relationships to big oil, pharmaceuticals, & Wall Street are the culprits. McCaul is part of a broken system, and voters will assert their disapproval in November.  It is time to remind Rep. McCaul, and every other do-nothing Congressman, who they really work for.

in today's edition of the weekly GLBT diary at Daily Kos, there is a poll about which Act Blue candidate the group should contribute to. I made a case for Ted.
