Sylvester Turner to Switch Parties?

By Byron LaMasters

Save Texas Reps speculates. I wonder what the GOP is offering him?

Update: Via email and Greg's Opinion is a statement on Turner's FOX News appearance:

St. Rep. Sylvester Turner will appear on "Hannity and Colmes" Monday to discuss HB 1093. It would release seriously-ill bed-ridden sex offenders from prison into strict medical supervision. Just one of these people cost the state $1.5 million for medical care in 2004. The bill has widespread support and is expected to easily win passage in the House early next week.

To quote from Friday’s Austin American Statesman: (the entire story is attached)

"In 2003, inmates serving time for sex crimes were barred from a program that allows some convicts who are critically or terminally ill to be paroled to a nursing home, hospice or other approved location. That change affected six of the 20 convicts who had the highest medical bills that year, racking up a total of more than $7.4 million, and six of the top 20 in 2004, records show.

"A study last year by the Legislative Budget Board estimated that the state could save more than $3 million over the next five years by paroling convicts like the Million Dollar Man to facilities where they can draw federal Medicaid money to cover their medical expenses. While they are in prison, they are not eligible for Medicaid."

It better be good. His district is over 80 percent Democratic.

Jesus Christ could be the Republican nominee in District 139 and He'd still lose by 50 points.

It'd have to be a statewide position. At the very least.

Also, FWIW, the DINO extinction project is a worthy endeavor.

I would hate for Sylvester Turner to switch parties but, God knows he has tried to be a good Democrat. He has represented Texans as well as any rep. I believe many Texas Democrats are totally oblivious to the sensitivities and concerns of African American Democrats. We, too, bleed red blood over your disrespect. Our perception is when we are needed the Party makes us visible-otherwise we remain invisible and ignored. Do you not know that we have become savvy politicos who can think and plan like others?
Racism is so engrained in many of you that you are unaware of how your own petty jealousies, unfairnesses and stereotypical prejudices hurt our Party. Young, intelligent, highly educated African Americans have choices. They don't have to take your insults just to sit at your tables of mediocrity. Our Party will never rise until you give equal respect.

If you think African Americans are going to fare better in the republican party I've got a house in the third ward that I'll sell you for $1 million. Maybe JC Watts can advise you on how elevated his chair was in the Republican party. The African American community may have an emerging middle class, but still has significant child health, education and other disparity issues that Sylvester has "helped" by carrying the water for Craddick et al to slash CHIP, pass this major joke called School Finance reform (read No Rich White Child's School Left Unfunded), et al. I think he's looking for a lifeline before he ends up in Ron Wilson's club.

Who knows, it could be on the gay foster parent issue or a thousand other stupid things the Lege is doing. That is a pretty weak link to party switch speculation.

Turner is not going Republican. The Republicans need a go to person in the Democratic party and Turner seems to be the man for the job. As for the young gentlemen who just spoke, I am also African American and I have to tell you that I do not agree with the recent votes of Turner. There have been at least 2 occasions when Turner has claimed to have not been present or aware of key votes that hurt his constituency specifically. (Healthcare and Gambling were the two bill subjects). I have heard the stories about Turner being a champion as well. The question is, in a political climate where it is difficult to be a Democrat in Austin, where is his fight now?
