By Byron LaMasters
From the Travis County Democratic Party:
*Saturday, April 23, 2005 - Cong Dist 21 Town Hall mtg*
The two meetings on Saturday, April 23, are set as follows:
10:00 AM - Wimberley Junior High Cafeteria, 200 Texan Blvd., Wimberley
1:00 PM - Hill Country Senior Citizens Center, 1310 West Hwy. 290,

Cong. Lamar Smith, whose district covers a large slice of Travis and most of Hays Counties will be holding a Town Hall meeting. This will be the first such meeting in the district this year and the first opportunity for constituents to question Rep. Smith on important issues. For more information, www.lamarsmith.house.gov
Show up at the meeting and ask him why he's Tom DeLay's #1 lackey, or tell him why Bush's Social Security privatization scheme is a bad idea.

The 2003 redistricting made District 21 a bit less conservative, since it chopped off most of the Hill Country while adding big chunks of Central and South Austin. Rhett Smith got more than a third of the vote just by having his name on the ballot- he didn't run a campaign. Does anyone think Lamar could be challenged if a solid candidate stepped up to the plate? Especially given the Delay connection?
I attended the meeting in Wimberly. Smith's response to how he could give $$ to Delay and sit in judgment on the Ethics Committee was two fold: one he gave the money "a long time ago before he was put on the Ethics Committee" and "everybody does it". I hope he goes down in flames holding Delay's hand.
I hear a great deal of talk about John Courage running against Lamar Smith. Courage ran once before in that district, before it was so drastically reconfigured. He's a progressive Democrat, vocally antiwar, a Veteran, and a teacher. He's also very gifted as a speaker. I think we could have a real candidate here--one who represents the progressive demographic in Austin, which is sorely denied a representative at the present time.
