March 14, 2005Filings for the Dallas County School BoardBy Byron LaMastersI finally got on the Dallas County Democratic Party email list, and today's email brings news of two Democrats filing to run for the Dallas County School Board:
Ann Hubener is the mother of Katy Hubener - the 2004 Democratic nominee for HD 106 who nearly defeated Ray Allen. Dixon was the 2002 Democratic nominee for CD 32, losing to Pete Sessions. Dixon also ran for Dallas County School Board in 2003 finishing third in a field of six for two at-large seats (interestingly, now-Sheriff Lupe Valdez was also among the losing candidates in that field - I endorsed Dixon and Valdez in that race). Both Hubener and Dixon are great Democrats, and would certainly add some needed diversity to a White-male dominated board. Posted by Byron LaMasters at March 14, 2005 03:06 PM | TrackBackComments
These are great candidates. Both of them would make excellent additions to the school board. Posted by: Kirk McPike at March 14, 2005 03:25 PMcool! what did they say? Posted by: Byron L at March 14, 2005 03:29 PMPlease be advised that the incumbent in District #1, Barnett Goodstein, is also a Democrat (I'm working toward his re-election, by the way--feel free to volunteer to make phone calls). Yet another Democrat, Nahum Apodaca, filed, but will be withdrawing his application shortly. The lone R running for the seat is Jan Woody, the less said about whom the better. Posted by: precinct1233 at March 14, 2005 04:59 PMThanks for the info, Paul. I'm still inclined to support Pauline Dixon, but it's good to know that there's another Democrat on that board. I only knew about Larry Duncan and Martin Hoffman. Still, I think that it's ridiculous that a county as diverse as Dallas has such little diversity on that board. I think that Pauline Dixon's experience as an educator and extensive activism in the Democratic Party make her the best candidate in the race. Posted by: Byron L at March 14, 2005 05:06 PMAmen to Byron's remarks about Pauline Dixon. I've known Pauline for over 40 years and she is very well-respected professionally and politically by those who have worked with her. Pauline is most qualified and capable of contributing positive energy. Similarly, I have known Ann Hubener (for only 20 or so years) to be a committed and courageous Democrat. Ann will also make us proud. As a proud "Uppity Woman" active for ELR, ERA, etc. in the 70's, I certainly support any opportunity to diversify. Both and Ann and Pauline would help that effort. Posted by: Jean Ball at March 14, 2005 07:50 PMWell, it is true that Pauline has extensive educational experience, but I'm not sure that it in and of itself makes her preferable to someone who's been on the board for years, particularly when that person is also a Democrat. She came in 3rd for the 2 atlarge seats in 2003 (Lupe Valdez came in 5th): both victors were Old White Guys (1 D and 1 R) in an extremely low-turnout election despite the Dallas Mayor's race being on the same card. You are right that the lack of diversity on this board should be noted, since it's 6 white guys and 1 black guy. That may change, though, since 1 of the atlarge seats may be about to be filled by appointment, replacing one of the white guys with, dare I hope, a Hispanic. Posted by: precinct1233 at March 14, 2005 08:10 PMAs Katy Hubener (daughter of Ann the candidate in #4) pointed out to me privately, this board is currently made up of 7 old white guys, not the 6 of 1, 1 of the other I posted previously. My apologies. Posted by: precinct1233 at March 15, 2005 01:49 PMPauline Dixon and Ann Hubener will be a breath of fresh air in these offices. I've known and worked with both of them in Democratic politics for more years than I can count. They are true activists who are well known among their fellow Democratic foot soldiers and trench workers in this county. They will bring exceptional credentials and positive change to the Dallas County School Board. It's also about time that we have some gender and race diversity on this body.
