Representative Government?
By Byron LaMasters
I'm pleased that the Iraqi elections were completed without widespread violence, however, I fear that the National Assembly will hardly be representative of the Iraqi people. Via Juan Cole are some Zogby Poll results:
Sunni Arabs who say they will vote on Sunday: 9%
Sunni Arabs who say they definitely will not vote on Sunday: 76%
Shiites who say they likely or definitely will vote: 80%
Kurds who say they likely or definitely will vote: 56%
What would be the American equivalent of such results? Juan Cole adds more:
On the other hand, if the turnout is as light in the Sunni Arab areas as it now appears, the parliament/ constitutional assembly is going to be extremely lopsided. It would be sort of like having an election in California where the white Protestants all stayed home and the legislature was mostly Latinos, African-Americans and Asians.

Too bad for the Sunni. They had months advanced noticed, as well as for the rest of the Iraqi population, that an election was coming up. If they don't want to vote then that is there friggin problem. Too bad about the lopsided representation. They had a shot. They forfeit it.
Remember that next time.
Yeah too bad for the people in the Sunni areas that were scared for their life if they actually left their houses to vote...
You "fear"?
Can't really keep that "positive" tone of "happiness" over the Iraqi elections going too long, can ya?
Big defeat for the screaming libs today. Elections held in Iraq after hippies have been whining for weeks that: they'd never happen, they'd never happen on time, or they'd never get enough people to come out.
Now the lib position (of last resort) has got to be that the elections weren't truly representative. What a slap in the face to millions of Iraqi citizens.
Anything to try and undermine Bush's credibility. The screaming liberal's message never has to stay on target, and they never worry about who gets insulted.
Byron... where the hell was your "fear", when Saddam Hussein was "winning elections" with 99% of the vote? Maybe for a little reference point, you might want to discuss how this election represents a major step towards freedom in a country where all the other tribes were being under-represented while a Sunni and Sunni henchmen ruled the country with a totalitarian, fanatical, murderous reign of terror.
Nah, they went fine.
In fact, so well that our continued presence in Iraq is now unnecessary.
