January 10, 2005DNC Atlanta Report: Part 3 of 3By Karl-Thomas MusselmanHaving finished up parts one and two from my time at the Atlanta DNC Southern Caucus meeting, now for the bit about Texas. Of the dozen or so DNC members from Texas, it is likely that they will end up voting for Martin Frost in the early rounds, not because they may believe that he is the best candidate, but because he's a Texan, and it's just the proper thing to do. What was causing some consternation is that our State Chair, Mr. Charles Soechting, planned on introducing a resolution of support at today's State Democratic Executive Committee meeting to be voted on. The SDEC has 60 odd voting members, of which many are Dean folk that won elections for the seats at last year's State Convention. No one likes to be railroaded into having to vote a particular way. In fact, my SDEC district representative met with 11 of the 21 county chairs in our region this weekend. I was proud enough that they had put forth a strategic planning statement and program to be submitted to the chair about how to work with counties for future success. Then I was told over the phone that the 11 County Chairs endorsed Howard Dean for National Chair and urged our SDEC rep to make that known. This was shocking to me. Those County Chairs weren't Deaniacs or swept into office in local coups. They are hard working, older Party folk who want to win and restore the Party in the very rural areas which they represent. The fact that this crowd at the bottom of the ladder is in favor in Dean could be an indicator that there is more support out there for real reformers than we are seeing on the surface. It also jives well with ruminations that Dean is actually the fallback choice of much of the Texas delegation should Frost be knocked out. Below are some thoughts from David H., one of Texas's DNC members whom had given me permission to share some of his relevant thoughts.
Frost as chair would probably mean more for Texas as far as money and support go (instead of it being sucked out of Texas to other states). But in this case I have to be a Democrat before a Texan, and to put 1 state ahead of the other 49 is shortsighted.

i was at the meetup and Holmes did kinda get shouted down (at one point).. i felt sorry for him.. i think we are all sick of the status quo and any "insider" represents that to the people who worked this election cycle.. espeically if they were "new guard". Posted by: AustinGirl172 at January 10, 2005 03:30 PMOh, don't feel sorry for me - I welcomed the comments and the contention. You've got to realize, as a DNC member, I have never been lobbied on anything before this race. I can not tell you how happy I am to have people caring about the race and Texas DNC members vote in it. What all of the people there did not know is that I am one of them, I have just not been convinced that Dean is the one to get us out of our current problems. Otherwise, all I have been doing as a DNC member is exactly what the members of that meetup group say they want done in the Democratic Party: I have been training new activists on how to get involved in Party affairs, I have held workshops on the Party rules and proceedures so that the old-timers in the party can at least be challenged. I have trained new activists on how to organize their precincts and how to connect with Democrats in their neighborhoods all year around - not just when the election season rolls around. The only difference between the people in that room that night and me is that I chose another candidate for President than the one they chose. Some of them may not want to work with me because of that choice - but I will tell you this: Howard Dean does not have a monopoly on the new activist dynamic in the Democratic Party. I will work with every Democrat - from those who supported Dennis Kucinich to those who supported Lieberman. But if anyone thinks I am status-quo, they really should take the time to get to know me a little better. Posted by: david holmes at January 10, 2005 05:32 PMThanks for posting here David, I'm glad that we are having a discussion about all of this, and hopefully connect people to the party better to lessen the Us v. Them feeling. Posted by: Karl-T at January 10, 2005 10:36 PMKarl, You note: "In fact, my SDEC district representative met with 11 of the 21 county chairs in our region this weekend. I was proud enough that they had put forth a strategic planning statement and program to be submitted to the chair about how to work with counties for future success." I ask in awesome wonder: I know the main point of your post was the CCs endorsing Dean, but I have to know, what Senate District are you in again? And how did this "strategic planning statement," come about? Do you have a copy of it? Can I get a copy of it? As you may have noted from some of my guest posts, we're doing some stuff in SD2 regarding preparing for the 2006 elections and doing what we can to get candidate to run against Deuell. But, though I'm not SDEC and we have a wonderful SDEC member in Martha Williams (and Steve Tillery), I would like our SD to do something like this. I've always thought the SD unit of the party was under-utilized at the local level. Of course, two county chairs in our SD are plagued with the responsibility of having multiple SDs in their counties. (Dallas and Smith). While this kind of thing could be quite taxing for them, I think it is important. Posted by: Vince Leibowitz at January 11, 2005 02:07 AMSD 24. I'll try to find out from our county chair what happened to the plan. our SDEC reps are Bill Perkison and I can't remember the other one at the momment.
