Supersized Wal-Marts and Accordians
By Karl-Thomas Musselman
Of note on my road here at home (Friendship Lane, I kid you not) the Super Wal-Mart is being built just across from the old one. So you can imagine part of the daily excitement that is my life now, is walking 300 yards down the road to check on its progress. And of course that means I'm going to share it with you.
The long wall there is the back wall. The road is Friendship "Lane" (4 lanes) and the box in the distance is the old Wal-Mart. If you click on the pic, you will get a bigger one. Here is an image of the inside of the new structure from the other direction.
And below is the entertainment we had at our Gillespie County Democrats Christmas Party. Can you tell we are Fredericksburg Democrats? I love it.

So, there will be two Wal-monsters across from each other? Wow.
I hate Wal-Mart. But I'm one who puts their money where their mouth is and does not shop there.
I love the accordion pic. :)
Happy New Year, Karl-T!
I'm sorry, and DO not shop there--sorry, sleepy, bad grammar. :)
They are closing down the older one when the new one opens, to become a Tractor Supply Store we think.
Why a super WalMart in Fredericksburg, when the Kerrville super WalMart is a mere 35 minutes away? Economics, my dear Watson, economics!
Dear old Fredericksburg is one of the state's top tourist destinations and one Texas' best-marketed towns. Shopping, historic architecture, three new motels (which increased abailable bed space by 25%), some festival or event virtually every weekend of the year. Visitors love Fredericksburg, and Fredericksburgers (generally) love our visitors, and the sales tax payments they bring with them!
WalMart (as well as HEB)is here because of the wealth of Fredericksburg and Gillespie County. A little known fact, that I discovered during the recent tax freeze election, is that Gillespie County ranks 35th in the NATION in dividend income, and 21st in interest income (out of 3,140 counties nationwide). This info was based on Federal Tax returns filed in 2002. (http://trac.syr.edu/tracirs)
