Do they know something that I don't

By Nathan Nance

Guest post by Nate Nance

I keep seeing things in the British press that Rumsfeld is being pressured to resign. I can't tell if it is because they know something that we don't because of crappy American media or if they think Bush would actually use the best man for the job, which is obviously not Rumsfeld.

This is a guest post by Nathan Nance. Nate is a sports/news clerk at the Waco Tribune-Herald and writer/editor of Common Sense a Texas-based Democratic Web log. He can be reached at nate_nance@yahoo.com

It's probably just wishful thinking on their part. I don't believe Bush has the guts to fire Rummy.

I hate the notion that the American press is inferior to the UK press that seems prevalent on the Left. The Guardian, etc. are explicitly ideological newspapers- a tradition that hasn't really existed in the US since the 19th century (not as widely as in the UK at least) and its ideology is socialism. The US press is far more professional and much more accurate than the British press, so try not to bash it. I know you are a reporter and whatnot, so perhaps you know something I don't...

I hate the notion that the American press is somehow inferior, too, because I'm a part of it. Before anyone asks, I don't think my political leanings get into what I do, I mean I code the night's basketball summaries and standings so that they can be read. No bias there, except for Texas teams.

I've said it before, the American media is lazy. There is a prediliction to go after the easy story or just report horserace numbers, as we saw in the election. Everytime John Kerry started talking about Social Security, I would see pundits ask why he wasn't talking about Iraq. Now we're having to talk about it. There was a two-day summit this week on just economic policy where the agenda was laid out by the president: permanent tax cuts, tort reform and privatization.

Obviously there are exceptions like Sy Hersh and his reporting of Abu Ghraib. And though I may loathe the editorial page of the WSJ, I have to give kudos to their excellent newsroom dept.

Though the British press is obviously ideological, I don't think you can discount the laziness and unprofessional manner in which news is presented here in the states. For every Dan Rather or Tom Brokaw, there are twice as many Bill O'Reillys, Hannitys, Tucker Carlsons, James Carvilles and Joe Scarboroughs.

I think Bill Moyers put it best on his final broadcast by quoting Sen. Moynihan, "Everyone is entitled to their own opinion; no one is entitled to their own facts." I think the American press has a long way to go to being able to actually do their job of watching the government and reporting the facts.

Nate, that's a very good response. NOW was a super program last night and I will really miss Bill Moyers -
I am fortunate that I can watch the News at 5:30 and then the PBS Newshour at 6.
I watch Washington Journal on C-Span and the live events they cover. Take the march against the war. It was covered live on C-Span, not only the speeches but the actual march. The 24 hour cable put up a few clips. I turned to Fox and CNN and both showed clips of a few of the worst signs being held, with their talking heads deriding the signs and the protestors. You would have gotten a totally different take from watching the live event. With the internet I can read articles to newspapers I never have to subscribe to although they do have pesky registrations online and I hear on the blogs what others have to say and call into truth some of the bogus lazy reporting. From the NOW program last night, I was shocked to see Hannity take his radio program on the road and actually campaigning for Bush.
