John Kerry has some Explaining to do...

By Byron LaMasters

Greg and Ezra hit the nail on the head. Why the hell does John Kerry have $15 Million remaining in his campaign (not recount) account? If Kerry wants to even be considered in 2008 as a potential candidate, he ought to come up with a damn good excuse for this.

If you are a candidate in a down-to-the-wire race, you should be in debt by the end of the campaign. For a local example of this, take a look at Mark Strama. We have until December 11th to help him retire his campaign debt -- which I've heard is around $100,000. Strama won by 550 votes by the way. That's the way to do it.

Update: The DSCC and DCCC think the same way as Mark Strama. Campaign debt can be quickly reversed. Losing cannot. CNN reports:

Congressional Democrats and labor leaders also privately questioned Kerry's motives. One said he would personally ask the Massachusetts senator to donate some of the money to the Democratic House and Senate campaign committees.

Democrats lost seats in both the House and Senate on November 2, setbacks compounded by the multimillion-dollar debts they incurred in the process.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee borrowed $10 million in the final days of a campaign in which it spent heavily in Texas, where four veteran lawmakers wound up losing their seats. The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee borrowed a smaller amount, more than $3 million according to officials.

Lets see here. John Kerry has about $15 Million in the bank. The DCCC and DSCC have about $13 Million in debt. Does anyone else see the obvious solution here? The DCCC may have been unsuccessful in Texas (Chet Edwards excluded), but at least they went down fighting throwing in everything they had and then some (and don't forget, the DCCC needs our help for those two pesky Louisiana runoffs next month). That's the only way to do it...

Just a thought Byron, maybe he was planning on using that for his legal battles that he thought would result in contested states.

Yes, but no... Kerry had a seperate legal defense account established for that purpose. The CNN article continues:

Kerry had roughly $45 million left in his primary campaign fund as of mid-October, according to his Federal Election Commission report, and could use that as seed money for another presidential bid. (Kerry won't rule out 2008 bid)

His final report is not due until next month, but officials close to Kerry said he has $15 million to $17 million in that account, with no outstanding debts, after giving the DNC about $23 million and state parties about $9 million since the mid-October report.

In addition, the report showed that Kerry had about $7 million on hand in a legal and accounting compliance fund that he could use for legal expenses in a 2008 campaign. Officials said he raised several million more for that account since the filing.

My understanding, Byron, is that it's technically primary campaign money.

Nonetheless, I hope Kerry will make every legal effort to convert it to something useful for Democrats now.

I remember some general saying, "Armies always plan to fight the last war." The same thing is true here. Kerry and the DNC seem to have been planning to fight a Florida-style campaign after the actual election, but the ballots just didn't fall like they thought they did.

Seems to me that if he was anticipating a second Florida-like affair, $7 million wouldn't go very far. Hence the reserving of some extra cash.

he could of been saving it for a legal fight

Maybe he wants to pay off the loan on Te-ray-suh's secong mortgage?

If the DCCC borrowed money, they sure as hell didn't spend it on Max Sandlin in CD 1. I saw a grand total of one mail piece, some Spanish-language yard signs, an office in Tyler with scant few staff that I heard about, and that commercial that was pulled.

Where the hell did their Texas money go?

... so why are there still "Donate to John Kerry Today!" ads on this site? ;)

Posted by: Karl at November 18, 2004 07:05 PM

Some thoughts:
Maybe they overbudgeted a bit for ad money in the battleground states at the very end. Judging by all the reports of ad campaigns done by anti-Bush 527's (including 2 of which I am a member and contributed to), maybe the Kerry campaign didn't want to compete for airtime with 527's that could give hard line messages from out on the fray to do the negative part of it for them. Or maybe they gave up in some states they'd budgeted

Anyway, let's leave Kerry alone. Let's leave Kerry bashing to the conservatives--they're bound to do plenty of it. I think as liberals (democrats, progressives) we must cling to eachother for dear life, not indulge in eating one of our own. Wind-surfing, manicure getting, resort skiing, (even green tea drinking!) as he may be, he is still a great Democrat and I am so sad he was not elected president.
By the way, one of yall might know as a fact what I am floating as a theory--I don't think Donna Brazile likes John Kerry very much. Just a vibe I get from the way she talks about his campaign, about him, etc. Do any of yall know for sure, one way or the other?

THIS IS INEXCUSABLE!!!!!

Dumping another $15 million into Ohio very well have made the difference. Heads should roll over this.

Posted by: WhoMe? at November 19, 2004 12:29 AM

Heads did roll. Out of the campaign, into the unemployment line. They lost, the people spoke. Can't say i'm crying about this. Hey my guy won. Sure shows where his priorities were, not looking to help down ticket. Let them take care of themselves.
