It's Official: Hubert Vo Wins

By Byron LaMasters

The count is completed and House District 149 has a new state representative: Hubert Vo. It's now official pending a Heflin recount:

With the last votes finally counted late Monday, Democratic newcomer Hubert Vo nudged Republican incumbent Talmadge Heflin out of the Texas House of Representatives seat he has held for 22 years by a 31-vote margin.

According to the official canvass, Vo garnered 20,693 votes, compared with 20,662 for Heflin.

So taking Vo's likely victory into consideration, what will be the party composition of the next Texas legislature?

Net Dem gain of +1 will make it 87 R and 63 D.

Once Harris Co. Clerk Beverly Kaufman was rebuked by Secretary of State Geoff Connor last week for apparently trying to sneak through a secret count of the mail-in and provisional ballots, the Republican elections administrator appears to have straightened up and flown right in this process.

It is heartening to know that Connor, an appointee of ultra-partisan Republican Rick Perry, had enough commitment to the integrity of the democratic system to step in. It is also heartening to know that Kaufman, who admitted that she had tried to rush through a count last Thursday "at the urging of Mr. Heflin," seems to have decided that doing her job fairly took precedence over doing the bidding of the outsiders from Austin who were pressuring her to tamper with the vote.

In the end, it looks like fairness prevailed.

Okay Byron, i see my comments are being deleted. How would you like your votes deleted just because someone disagreed with you. Your calls for equal rights sure do sound hollow to me right now. I have never dropped any fowl language. Never used personal attacks here.
Do you think Mr. Vo would approve of such a practice? He came here to get away from the practice of suppresion of free speech.

Sure seems like you don't want to here the truth, just live in a fantasyland. If you dislike America so much, move.

Peter,

Perhaps it was your spelling. For example, the correct term is "foul" language, not "fowl" language, unless you're speaking of birds raised to be eaten.

Also, you stated, "Never used personal attacks here." This is an uncomplete sentence. Please use proper grammar when posting.

One of my weak points is spelling, sorry.

Peter,

I don't recall deleting any of your comments - I did run my despamer last night that deleted several hundred spam comments over the past week, but I personally haven't deleted any in the past week or so.

There will almost certainly be an election contest in the House, whose members are the ultimate decision-makers on who is seated. This quasi-trial usually takes a few weeks, so neither candidate is likely to have a chair in the House chamber for several weeks after the rest of the House is sworn in.
