Dick Durbin for Senate Democratic Leader
By Byron LaMasters
Daschle lost. Fuck John Thune. I had the opportunity to meet Dick Durbin at the Democratic convention this summer, and he's a fantastic spokesman and leader in the Democratic caucus. He's a progressive / liberal Democrat with a backbone, but as a Midwesterner from southern Illinois it's hard to label him as a wild-eyed liberal. Also, I think it's important to have a Democratic leader from a solidly Democratic state. I think either Chris Dodd or Dick Durbin would fit the bill in that respect. Senate Democrats were hurt on many occasions in the past year or two by Daschle's need to show conservative credentials to the voters back home in South Dakota. That's a concern that Dodd or Durbin won't have.

I'd prefer Russ Feingold.
There'd be a certain justice in promoting the junior senator from Massachusetts, John Kerry, to senate majority leader.
At least it would keep it interesting.
Kerry for Minority Leader? I was thinking about that just a few hours ago. That would make for some interesting bipartisanship.
Unfortunately, the democrats in the Senate will need some balls because the next two years will be ugly. And if the Republicans play their cards right, they could make the Democratic senators look like idiots and pick up seats in two years.
Hillary. Let's be honest. Hillary.
Why? Well, in 1950, LBJ, a first term senator became majority whip and then in 1952 became minority leader (four years in the senate) when Scott Lucas and then Ernest McFarland were defeated in consecutive elections while serving as majority leader. He hadn't been around long, but he was a savvy political operator.
Give it to Hil; it is an easy way to test her national viability before it is too late (i.e. after the 2008 convention).
