November 03, 2004Election Night ThoughtsBy Byron LaMastersI'm back home from KUT. Things are pointing to a Bush victory, although I'm not sure what the heck is going on in Ohio. I don't think we'll have a resolution in the presidential race anytime in the next couple of hours, so I'm going to put up some posts on other races. Regardless, it's a disappointing night for Democrats - especially in the U.S. Senate. Here in Texas things are pretty bleak overall. It looks like Chet Edwards won (thank God), but that's it. I'll have some good news on a few things here. Mark Strama has beaten Jack Stick tonight, the Wohlgemonster has lost, as has Phil Crane, and I feel good about some gains I'm seeing in Dallas County races. As we've been chatting about the returns, Jim said this to me: "If we win, great, but something went seriously wrong tonight. There is something seriously wrong with our party and the way we are doing things. What worries me especially is that the "easiest" people to blame are the people who worked hardest here: young people, liberals, etc.". I'm inclined to agree. If Kerry contests this thing, I'll be on the streets tomorrow to fight with him, but if not, Democrats have some serious soul searching to do. It's not a process I look forward to do. I'm going to date this for tomorrow morning, even though this is being posted at 1:25 AM -- I think it's a bit more important a post than my thoughts on the Dallas Sheriff's race (among others). Byron, Don't forget the other good news, that our hard-fighting brave-hearted Lloyd Doggett won as well, though he's no longer my Congressman. In my newly gerrymandered district, as if in some pathetic parody of the Matrix, the evil Smith beat the other Smith. Kudos to Patrick Rose for apparently winning as well. Tom Delay will survive to be brought to trial and ridicule among the wreckage he has made of our once bipartisan state. I disagree -- I cannot blame those who gave their all only to see it fall short. May every Texan who wished for this outcome receive everything they so they richly deserve. Posted by: melior at November 3, 2004 04:21 AMNot that results in Texas would be any different, but the reported early voting in the 13 most populated counties was 4.8 million. After long lines and heavy voting Tuesday, the total votes cast were 7.25 million. Perhaps I got the numbers wrong on Monday, but that is what I recall reading at the Secretary of State web site. Posted by: Phil Ford at November 3, 2004 07:36 AMNEWSFLASH: You lost. The vast majority of Americans are in opposition to your agenda. After enduring four years of your whining about a guy who lost the popular vote by just over half-a-million votes, the American people responded by giving President Bush the first majority for a presidential candidate since 1988. Your continued inability to support what is quite obviously a Bush win demonstrates clearly that you are more interested in personal glory than national unity. I wish you all the worst in life, you hypocrites. Posted by: Tom Brokaw at November 3, 2004 07:40 AMFirst of all, you are simply wrong for wishing us "the worst in life." That is an objective fact. Peace be with you. Second, if the vote tally shows Bush winning then I will accede to it. And I will give him what support he is due by virtue of his office. That does not mean, however, that I will not protest what is, to me, an ideology and agenda that is wrong for America, that is twisting our nation's soul, wrecking our nation's finances, and destroying our nation's credibility. Let's all be patriots today. Posted by: Jim D at November 3, 2004 08:11 AMHey chief, why don't you wish a little peace on your pals at this site before you worry about me. Here's a few choice quotes from your own site: "the Wohlgemonster" Contrary to your own ideology, this site has been a place of hate (I thought it wasn't a family value) rationalized by your demonization of the opposition--it's ok to hate Bush and DeLay, because they're eeevvvil. I, on the other hand, profess no ideology of peace or love. Therefore I feel comfortable wishing ill upon those who support Cahill and Kerry's continued efforts to impede the work of the country. Posted by: The Kettle at November 3, 2004 08:22 AMNot that it matters, but registered voter numbers, early voting numbers all are different from what was on the Secretary of State web site on Monday night. Posted by: Phil Ford at November 3, 2004 09:11 AMVery very few of those provisional ballots will be counted. That's the nature of provisional ballots. The interesting story will be to compare provisional voters with the registration scrub lists. Hopefully Greg Palast is on it. Posted by: DeadDogDemocrat at November 3, 2004 09:27 AMWhy did the exit polls differ so greatly from the election results? The media were saying that they need to look at how they perform exit polls in the future because in this election, the numbers didn't match. Has anyone examined perhaps the way the Diebold machines process votes, especially since they promised a victory to Bush? Posted by: ml at November 3, 2004 10:55 AMyou, sir, are no tom brokaw. "Therefore I feel comfortable wishing ill upon those who support Cahill and Kerry's continued efforts to impede the work of the country." oh yeah, that is definitely not hateful and completely in the spirit of unity. it's quite ironic that your name is kettle (i'll let you figure out that one on your own). anyways, your not fooling anyone with "i'm-an-indepent" facade. any reasonable person can see right through you. why are you so ashamed to be a republican/conservative, especially after last night? I read that Polls were favoring towards Gore back in the 2000 race but that was the opposite. Where Gore was leading by a point or two. correction : It proves that exit polling didn't get it on the nail. Posted by: NineFiveSix at November 5, 2004 09:08 PMPost a comment
