Watch Tim Ryan

By Byron LaMasters

Blistering attack by Rep. Tim Ryan (D-Ohio), the youngest Democrat in the House on the possibility of a draft. The man was on fire. On fire... damn! (Via Smart Ass and BOP News).

I was actually interviewed by a Dallas Morning News reporter yesterday about the draft - we'll see if and when they publish a story about the issue. I don't think that a draft is extremely likely, but I do believe that the reelection of George W. Bush will make it more likely, and that, I believe is a legitimate election issue in which many students and young people are very concerned (Perhaps that helps explains Kerry's twenty-five point, 56-31% lead among voters age 18-29 in the Zogby poll released today, also via Smart Ass). The Bush doctrine of (nearly) unilateral action and preemption has already led us into a backdoor draft of our National Guard and reservists. The logical next step would an actual draft.

Update: Democracy for America has an anti-draft petition.

Charlie Rangel put up the only draft bill in Congress. They had a vote on his bill and he voted against it. Amazing, Democrats Rangel and Hollings put forth legislation for a draft and you blame it on Republicans. Next thing you know, you'll be blaming Republicans for pro abortion legislation.

The draft rumor was brought up on moveon.org, written about in articles by Howard Dean, and David Hackworth.

There is no truth to the rumor, and every branch of the military, with the exception of the Air National Guard and the Army National Guard, made their quotas on recruits for 2004. They have all they need.

Conscientious objectors? You can sleep well tonight.

My Marine son has your back.

peter, people are going to think those of us
named "peter" are stupid only because of you.
Rangel and Hollings did that to make the country aware of just how serious the Iraqi situation is. They wanted an open forum so people like Tim Ryan could be on record for opposing not the draft, but the stupidity of Bush's policies over the last four years.

Beverly? Thank your son from the bottom of my heart. He has a special place in heaven.

I'll Quote Congressman Ryan for those who won't listen:
" Bremer says we need more troops. The Pentagon says we need more troops, and this President cannot get them from the international community. There is only one option left. Let us be honest with the American people. "

Now. Any Questions?
If you support Bush, get thee to a recruiter!

The difference between Iraq and Viet Nam?
Bush had a plan to get out of Viet Nam.

Beverly: I am a former Marine. I know the honor, courage, and commitment inherent in your son. He is an admirable man. Unfortunately, the reason why he is fighting remains clouded.

Peter: As for Congressman Rangel and the Draft bill... He was trying to make a point, something you have failed to do.
