On-Campus Diary, Sept. 10: Houston IS worth it.
By Jim Dallas
At least if you're on two wheels, going from UH Central Campus to Bellaire via MacGregor, Main, and Braeswood is a really awesome little trip. Nice corners and grades.
I guess I know how Capt. Kong felt riding The Bomb down in Dr. Strangelove. Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee-(haw).
Lots of green. Frankly, as an outsider, I tended to think of Houston not being particularly verdant. Taking a cut through Hermann Park changed that real quick.
(Got a little bumpy though around the point where N. Braeswood turns into Beechnut; my scooter's speedometer stopped working, presumably because the odometer cable got jolted. Figuring out what went wrong and how to fix it is my weekend project).
Now, on another front, I've located an HEB, a Luby's, a Taco Bell, and a Blockbuster. So far, the Third Ward isn't looking nearly desolate. But I have not yet figured out where the nearest Taco Cabana is, and this upsets me greatly.
I don't want my opinion of Houston's historic Third Ward spoiled by the lack of accessibility to a Taco C!

Closest Taco Cabanas to campus are at S. Main @ O.S.T. and Montrose @ Westheimer.
Taco Cabana is not the place to be in Houston. The better choice is a Tapatia Taqueria which is a local chain. The hippest one is on Richmond in Montrose (between Montrose and Shepherd), and they are open all night. Also 100% Taquitos on SW Freeway is excellent (started by a UH grad). For the best sit down regular meal value you'll also have to go to Montrose to Barnaby's (3 locations in Montrose, original on Fairview by all the "homasexyull sinners" bars). Excellent food, great value.
That's not quite correct.
There is a Taco Cabana right there on Kirby, just north of 59S (before Richmond), IIRC. It's true that the main appeal of the place is their 24-hourness. Much better texmex chow is found at La Jaliscience, on Montrose around Fairview. Niko Nikos is also right there if you like gyros.
And be sure to drop in The Davenport lounge for a cool drink, Greenbriar @ Richmond. That place is the bomb.

Welcome to Houston Jim! Be sure to check out the bike trails around Memorial Park as well for some real grades and turns!
The Taco C at Main and OST is my regular one (open 24, 99 cent soft tacos) and La Tapatia is good too. You might also try Ruchi's at Alabama and Sheperd; it has the added benefit of being close to Cactus Music and the Bookstop. There's another at one Richmond and Kirby.
