August 23, 2004College Republicans to Exploit 9/11 AnniversaryBy Byron LaMastersThe College Republican National Committee is asking their chapters across the country to sign up for the 9/11 Never Forget Project for their campuses. That project is sponsored by Club 100 a program of the Young America's Foundation - a right-wing youth organization dedicated to promoting a conservative Republican agenda on college campuses. The College Republicans want to use the tragedy of 9/11 to bring more conservative speakers to college campuses. The College Republican National Committee boasts of this on their website:
The CR's are using Western Michigan University as an example of what they would like to see nationally. 9/11 shouldn't be about politics. It should be about everyone, all of us, Democrats, Republicans and Independents remembering the loss that we all suffered on that day. I hope that Republicans at UT will break from the national CR organization, choose to avoid partisan politics on 9/11, and join with the rest of us in respectfully remembering our shared loss of that day. To do otherwise would be unfortunate and shameful. Seth Tanner of the College Democrats of America blog, Smart Ass adds his two cents as well:
Agreed. If either the UT College Republicans or the UT Young Conservatives of Texas chapter exploits 9/11 for partisan political purposes, I'll be there with a lot of others to call them out on it. Posted by Byron LaMasters at August 23, 2004 05:56 PM | TrackBack Comments
let's get to the real issue here Byron. You guys are just pissed that you didn't think of it first. Just like Kerry was pissed at Bush for stealing his thunder on pulling troops out of Korea and Germany. If the CRs can get more students involved in the process through this and other outreaches, what's the problem? By the way, is there any thing I can say to talk you out of becoming a lawyer? Have you really thought this through? I say that because of my wife's experience. She went to Loyola Law School out here in LA,passed the bar, and then starting working for a firm down here in Orange County. The firm atmosphere was toxic for new associates. They are completely driven by the billable hour. It drove her to nervous breakdown pratically. She ended up quitting and got a job as a compliance director for a major mortgage company out here. Cheers Posted by: Allan Bartlett at August 23, 2004 10:13 PMAllan, are you sure your wife's depression was the result of practicing law and not her home life? By the way, not all lawyers become corporate whores going to work for "the man." Some of us find very rewarding careers representing the little guy. I pity people like your wife who go to law school strictly for reasons of greed and then end up hating the profession. I too would hate such a big firm practice - but some of us realized that beforehand. Posted by: WhoMe? at August 23, 2004 11:07 PMThe Gadflyer recently wrote about the success that freeper groups are having on campus. BTW, there's still plenty of time to organize something for 9/11. As a president of University Democrats at UT-El Paso, our membership has planed a memorial service of some sort for 9-11. BUT UNLIKE OUR CR counterparts, we were not going to include our organzation's name in any of the advertisment or any anti-bush/pro-kerry talk during this memorial because we know its not and should not be a political project. I don't mind political groups, either ours or theirs, to do activities like this because its important to remind ourselves of these events. And memorial activies like this will boost the apperance of the organzation regardless if your trying to be as much non-partisan as you can, as a Memorial for the Murdered Women in Juarez,Mexico that we organized. We did not put the name of the organzation on there, but those that did know that we sponored it were greatful for our work. (200 student attendence btw). As I said, I wouldn't mind if the CR took the lead on projects like this UNLESS they are trying to put their parties message in to it. This project is trying to do that, look at two of the speakers who will take part in some of the events: Dave Bossie is the author of Intelligence Failure: How Clinton’s National Security Policy Set the Stage for 9/11. He currently serves as president of Citizens United, a conservative, grassroots lobby organization located in Washington, D.C. Bossie served as president and chief investigator for the Center for Government Integrity, a government watchdog group investigating the then-Clinton administration. and the bio on another speaker Floyd Brown: As a speaker he has traveled coast to coast promoting conservative ideas at colleges including Dartmouth, University of Pennsylvania, Washington State University, and the University of California at Santa Barbara. Regardless of who thought about it first, it should NOT have any partisan leanings. Excuse me... I'm sure it was just a simple oversight on your part, BUT... Didn't you guys recently go apesh!t over a partisan, political "documentary" by Michael Moore entitled FAHRENHEIT 9/11? I guess your readers can expect you to call yourself out on this one? =P I'll be waiting with bated breath... I know what high standards of accountability which Democrats hold themselves. Posted by: Chris Elam at August 24, 2004 02:21 AMWell, both the right and left have used 9/11 for political purposes, whether it be F9/11, or the Bush campaign in their advertisements. My point is that on the actual day of the anniversary, I would hope that we could put politics aside and tone down the rhetoric. If Michael Moore or the Bush campaign or anyone else uses that day for their own partisan agenda, I would be dissappointed. Posted by: Byron L at August 24, 2004 11:20 AMSo basically... you're saying that its OK to use it the other 364 days of the year (365 in a leap year) to the tune of $100 Million+ box office domestic. =) I'm cool with that. Posted by: Chris Elam at August 24, 2004 02:07 PMRemember that I didn't like that movie. Posted by: Andrew D at August 24, 2004 02:45 PM" $100 Million+ box office domestic" So, does anybody know what the cumulative profits are of Fox News, the semi-official propaganda wing of the Republican Party? ................................................................................... "Remember that I didn't like that movie." Post a comment
