And the Least Progressive Senator is...
By Byron LaMasters
Progressive Punch has the results, and it's Texas' very own, John Cornyn, who clocks in at 1.56 of 100 on the Progressive Punch scale. That ranks him 100 of 100 in the US Seante. For the record, Kay Bailey Hutchison ranks 71 of 100 on the Progressive Punch scale among U.S. Senators.

The main conclusion from this poll is not how conservative Cornyn is, but how spineless he is. What this really says about Cornyn is that he is a toadie for the Prez, and the Rethuglican leadership. Absolutely he is a conservative, but I knew the guy when he was a Supreme Court Justice, and he was never this wacko. It shows that he is in WAY OVER HIS HEAD, he has no spine, is totally dependent on his patrons (DeLay, Bush, Frist, etc.), that he does whatever they say, and is completely unable to stand on his own two feet. How pathetic that our Senator is such a wimp. (I laugh at the distinction to Senator LBJ, who had balls the size of watermelons).
Yep, Cornyn is a complete spineless drone. It was a major reason why I didn't want him to win in 2002, because I knew he'd be nothing but a bland, unthinking GOP foot soldier. He has no thoughts himself and does whatever the GOP leadership tells him to do. In Bush and Cheney's view, he's the perfect Senator.
The only weakness I see in ProgressivePunch's methodology is that their rankings don't all cover the same time frame. They go all the way back to '91, but Cornyn has only been in the Senate since '03.
So the comparisons are apples and oranges to some extent, which means I doubt you can use this (or any) ranking to claim that so-and-so is THE most conservative Senator or Rep. After all, by their methodology the most liberal Rep is the newly elected Stephanie Herseth (100% - 1 for 1!)
Still, Cornyn's pretty awful, no doubt about it. But we already knew that.
Cornyn never, ever answers my letters and emails. Senator Kay at least answers. I don't think Cornyn gives a damn about anyone who cannot contribute to his personal power. And yes, his voting record is awful; apparently, he never thinks for himself. What a mindless sell-out!
