Election Thread

By Byron LaMasters

Polls close across the state in various municipal elections at 7 PM. I'll use this thread to update the results. I'll mostly be following the Austin races, but I may have some remarks on some other races.

Update: Here are the numbers from the Austin races (11:23 PM- 100%):

And in my (Andrew D's) home town's wet/dry election:

At least now I'll have a way to dull the overwhelming misery of that dismal town...

I would love to know what led to the results in ACC place 6 as well as how our friend Jennifer Gale got 39% of the at large vote...

ACC Place 6.... Republicans voted for Levin.. in a race with 3 Dems and one Gooper that's not a huge surprise that he's in the run-off.

As for Gale... I have three words that I know you'll understand... Austin is Weird

Rivera also got the statesman endorsement..

Gale got the votes she did for a few reasons as I see it:

1. Name ID- she's run for 15 offices in like 5 years so ppl know the name

2. Woman vote- a small number of women voters will vote for a woman over a man (Jennifer vs. Doyle) when all other things are equal. Most people know nothing about these races (I couldn't tell you anything about that Doyle guy other than he's not Jennifer Gale, which is enough for me) so these voters vote for the woman. I would put that in quotation marks but I think that might be homophobic or transgenderedaphobic so...

3. Racists- Even in liberal Austin there are some racists. These people see a Latino name and an Anglo name and they go ahead and vote for the Anglo.

Add these up and you get near 40%. Good news, she seems to have tapped her base out as she said at a UD meeting that she got 40% last time she ran for school board. So we'll see.
