DeLay Rallies to end the Income Tax
By Byron LaMasters
DeLay and 100 supporters rallied today to end the federal income tax in Houston. KVUE reports:
More than 100 people rallied Thursday in Houston in a push to eliminate federal income taxes.
The move came on the deadline to file taxes -- April 15.
Members of Americans for Fair Taxation were joined by U.S. House Majority Leader Tom DeLay of Sugar Land.
The legislation would eliminate all federal income taxes and replace them with a voluntary, single rate retail sales tax on goods and services.
[...]
Georgia Congressman John Linder sponsored the FairTax Act in Congress.
Linder says DeLay's support of the legislation will help legitimize it.
Linder's plan would replace all income taxes with a 23 percent across-the-board sales tax.
But University of Houston law professor Ira Shepard says replacing the federal income tax with only a sales tax won't generate enough money.
Well, add this to the latest of Tom DeLay's crazy ideas. Not only would a federal sales tax be incredibly regressive, it would plunge the federal budget further into debt.
The Stakeholder (DCCC blog) has some insightful thoughts on the matter as well.

Here's the rub with the 23% sales tax ... I just did my own taxes and my effective net tax rate was 8%. Tom DeLay wants to substitute out the income tax with that sales tax. I spend nearly all of my income every year (sucks being broke). So Tom DeLay wants to triple my taxes.
Nice campaign issue. I wish the GOP would adapt this plan more tightly. I kinda miss having more Democrats in power.
