April 08, 2004Democratic Write-In Candidate in CD-10By Byron LaMastersThe Daily Texan reports:
I'm not sure what the rules are to get on the congressional ballot as a Democrat after the primary. I signed Sadun's ballot petition at the Travis County Convention, because I'm a voter in the 10th District. Anyway, I hope that he sets up a website or something to allow those of us in district 10 to help out his campaign. He doesn't really have a chance, but I'll at least feel good with the opportunity to vote for a Democrat for Congress. Posted by Byron LaMasters at April 8, 2004 04:00 PM | TrackBackComments
Dr. Sadun does have a website up at www.writeinsadun.org. Posted by: Greg at April 8, 2004 05:21 PMI'm not sure if there's anything he can do to get on as a Democrat (then again, a write-in ballot, even those officially registered, are not "on the ballot" per se). He probably would have a better chance of winning if he filed as an Independent, which should still be possible. On the other hand, I seem to recall that Strom Thurmond once won a Senate race in a landslide in South Carolina -- as a write-in candidate. Posted by: Jim D at April 8, 2004 07:02 PMHe's committed to running as a Democrat, and yes, Strom Thurmond did win an election as a write-in candidate. It's only right that Lorenzo win, as it would reset some karmic balance. The rules are that you need a mimum of 500 signatures. The campaign is on the way to that goal, but what would really be great is if he could get as many signatures as the winner of the April 13th run-off. Plus one. Posted by: John Lyon at April 8, 2004 09:11 PMNow it would be nice if we could find a write-in candidate here in Galveston. It would be nice to be able to vote for someone. Posted by: TC at April 9, 2004 01:22 AMYeah, Strom Thurmond was elected to the Senate as a write-in, and that was the only successful write-in campaign for any position in the US Congress in American History, if I'm not mistaken. Dr. Saldun won't win, but he provides the opportunity for Democrats to have a real choice in November. It'll be tough to get the word out, but we'll give it what we've got! Posted by: Andrew D at April 9, 2004 01:12 PMHe cannot get on the ballot as a Democrat, period, under Texas law. He could have if he had filed for the primary, but it's too late now. He has to do a petition just to get his votes counted as a write-in candidate, and there will be no party designation beside his name on the posted list of "filed" write-in candidates. Usually signatures won't count if the signer voted in a primary that year; a court might grant an exception if we ran no candidate in that race, but I wouldn't count on that. Can a Write-in candidate debate a candidate that is on the ballot? Could Lorenzo Sadun participate in a televised debate against McCaul? Posted by: Mary Anne at April 18, 2004 12:46 AM
