State Bar Polls for Judicial Candidates

By Byron LaMasters

I recently received an email of the State Bar Polls for the Texas Judicial races (I think they're on the Quorum Report as well, but you need a subscription. Among incumbents, Steven Wayne Smith is the only Judge to lose the bar poll. I didn't know that the 9th District based in Beaumont had very Republican Montgomery County.

I really hope Jan Patterson keeps her seat on the 3rd (Austin, up to Bell County, down to Comal County, and northeast to San Angelo). She is a wonderful judge. The Court until the late 90s, was all Democratic, and is now 3-3. Republican David Puryear is a former Democrat that was always a poor excuse for a county court judge, so he switched parties and won a seat on the 3rd. He defeated Justice Jones, one of the most honorable people I know in the world - what a shame that was. Republican Ken Law used to be the Court's Clerk years ago (he was a conservative Democrat that switched) and is a really nice guy actually and certainly very moderate, but is not all that bright. Republican Pemberton is a Perry appointee and is what you would expect from a Perry nominee. The remaining Democratic Justices, Mack Kidd and Bea Ann Smith are progressive Democrats, who will really need your support next time they are up for reelection.
