TYD Info

By Byron LaMasters

I'm a regional director of the Texas Young Democrats, so I want to be sure to pass along the latest from TYD.

Here is the statement by our president, Steven Bollinger regarding the redistricting decision.

Also, the Texas Young Democrats are planning a Campaign Invasion in the Special Senate District 1 and 31 elections later this month starting Saturday, January 17, 2004 at 1pm until 4pm Monday, January 19, 2004. If you can make it to help in either race (District 1 in Marshall or District 31 in Midland/Odessa) email TYD with the following information:

If you like to part of the invasion, please e-mail us at invasion@texasyds.org with the following info:

Name or Name of Group attending (if group, list all names
Contact phone number

Which Site (Midland-Odessa or Marshall)
Any Special needs

Both races have one Democratic Candidate. Paul Sadler is running in Senate District 1. Elaine King Miller is the Democratic candidate in Senate District 31. Both are quality candidates and we look forward to supporting both.

Could you post on why you think Elaine King Miller is a "quality candidate"? I'm having trouble finding any information about her on the internet.

btw, Byron. I did get around to donating $11 to Sadler's campaign. Add a dollar for the Internat y'all!

Well, I think that Sadler has a much better chance than Miller. She's a serious candidate though.

This is what I've found in a quick google news search:

From Moore News:

Dr. Elaine King Miller of Amarillo is the only Democrat who has filed for this position. She was a professor of pharmaceutical sciences for Texas Tech University School of Pharmacy in Amarillo from 1997 to 2001.

The Austin Chronicle said this:

On the other hand, District 31 -- which runs along the state's western edge, including both Amarillo and the Permian Basin (but not Lubbock) -- will almost certainly remain in GOP hands. Six Republicans (all Anglo men) and one Democrat (education consultant Elaine King Miller, an African-American woman) vie to replace Bivins.

So, she's an African-American Democratic female professor. She's the only Democrat in the race. It's a pretty much hopeless district, but she seems to me like a candidate worth supporting if you live in or near the district and you have time and/or money to help out the campaign.
