January 04, 2004Star Sightings in Los AngelesBy Byron LaMastersAs I wrote earlier, I decided to spend my new year's in Los Angeles. One of my good friends that graduated from UT last spring moved out here and my parents bought my airplane ticket for me a Christmas present, so I headed out here. It's been a good trip. I did manage one "star sighting" of sorts. And I'm giving myself bonus points because I actually met him in person as opposed to just to just seeing him. Anyway, I met Bryan Singer last night at a bar in West Hollywood. I didn't recognize him, but he was a friend of someone who I was talking to and I was introduced. He was the director of The Usual Suspects, X-Men and X2. I reluctantly saw X2 at the theators this summer. I was never really an X-Men fan, but I had nothing better to do, so I went. I surprised myself and I really liked it. Perhaps it was because I could relate to it in the way that "Iceman" came out to his family as a mutant. I didn't know this until last night, but it now makes sense then that Singer is openly gay, which I was happy to learn. As liberal as Hollywood may be, there seems to be a lack of prominent openly gay people in the industry. Anyway, that's my LA story. It's been a fun trip, but it's time to go back to Dallas tomorrow. And as a side note, I've supported the Vons Strike while I'm here. We shopped at Ralph's (who's locked out workers are back) while we were here. Did you get anything out of him about a part 3 to X-men? If you become a bigger fan of x-men, I'll send you my old comics :O) Have a safe trip back home Posted by: Mike at January 4, 2004 11:12 PMOn the topic of star sightings, I had a long conversation with Jimmy Fallon (from SNL)last year in New York riding on the train from upstate back to the City. I did not mention that I recognized him - we just chatted as one with someone you are sitting next to on a plane/bus/train. I think you are more likley to have star sightings in NYC than in LA because people actually walk around and use public transportation (E.g. I have ridden the subway with Tom Brokaw - I suppose its hard to talk to Brittany Spears when she's being escorted everywhere in a limo). Concerning Bryan Singer, YEARS ago at a film festival at Dobie Mall in Austin, he was screening one of his indies and was present in the audience for a Q&A session afterwards. For every question about the movie we just saw, there were about 3 concerning Usual Suspects. (As an aside, one of the best lines in all of cinema, is when Kevin Spacey said [as Kysor Syzey], "From know on, you're in the getting fucked by us business.") Well, I've been dog sick all weekend (starting Saturday morning) with the flu. Back to sleep I go (although I've been sleeping on and off all day). Posted by: WhoMe? at January 4, 2004 11:17 PMJust a word of thanks for the continued posting. There are other young, gay democrats out here in this right-leaning wasteland that agree with you. Keep up the good work ... and feel free to send me your number! Posted by: monceaux at January 5, 2004 01:39 PMAs for the comment about Britney. She does not get escorted around town. I live in the hollywood Hills and I saw her shopping at Ross, and she was nice, friendly, talkative, and gave me a hug, and oh, just so there's no confusion, I'm not 12 years old and a pop fanatic, I'm a grown adult almost in my 30's. When I was done speaking with Britney she and her mom and sister got into her car and left, no limo, just a normal SUV. I've seen several celbrities and have walked up and spoken to them all, to my surprise, I have yet to meet a celebrity that is not friendly. I met Halle Berry, Van Halen, Britney Spears, Pam Anderson, Kid Rock, Monica, Justin Timberlake, Toby McGuire, Amanda Peet, X-Hibit....etc, that's all I can think of on the spot. I love living here, it's a great place. Posted by: Kristi at September 10, 2004 06:36 PMPost a comment
