Al Sharpton
By Byron LaMasters
Al Sharpton has a new webpage. Thank God. His old one was a little embarassing. Glad to see it. My feelings on Al Sharpton? I welcome him to the debate, and I take his candidacy seriously, but I also laugh at the DLC types that are worried that he'll be a divisive force, might win South Carolina, and embarass the party. Please. Sharpton will only be a divisive force if the Democratic Party lets him. If we treat him with the respect that we would afford any other candidates, the Democratic Party has nothing to worry about. Only if we dismiss and insult Sharpton will we have to worry about him turning his supporters against the eventually nominee. While I would never consider voting for Sharpton in the primary, he does represent the views of many people in the base of the Democratic Party. It's important that we respect him and his supporters, even when we disagree with their tactics. A friend of mine is helping with the Texas campaign. One thing that I do hope that Al Sharpton brings to the debate is the issue of DC Statehood. I stongly support D.C. Statehood, and wish that most Democrats would take it more seriously. It's really a disgrace that 600,000+ American citizens have ZERO representation in Congress.

Make sure to respect the candidate who has spent his entire career race baiting and blaming every ill faced by African Americans on white folks. The same anti-semetic who was caught on TV dealing Coke. And lets not even start on Tawana Brawley. Yeah, real respectable. The Dems are a joke if they take him seriously. And those who don't take him on, are tip-toeing around him hoping he won't ruin their chances thinking he is the end all and be all voice of the black vote they need. The reason he is running is completely self-serving, just like Mosley-Braun, who Donna Brazile pretty much dared to run. If someone with his history was running on the GOP side, and no one had said anything about it to date, there would be the usual screams of "racial politics" coming from the left. Where is that now?
Byron, Sharpton is not known for liking members of the Tribe (of Israel), I'm not sure if you recall his role not just in Tawana Brawley but also in inciting the riots in New York that left one Orthodox Jew dead. Sharpton is a disgrace to the Democrat Party, but it is a measure of the bizarre state of your party today that Joe Liebermann and his followers should have to hold their noses and stand on a stage with him. And no, I wouldn't share it with Robertson or Falwell, they're not running for President.
I am a minority who is appalled by the candidacy of Al Sharpton, noted racist demagogue. It is disgusting that he is even taken seriously by the Democratic Party, let alone treated with gingerly care. I was offended by Senator Trent Lott's endorsement of Strom Thurmond's segregationist campaign, and was encouraged that the Republicans removed him from his leadership post.
Trent Lott's offense was to make a stupid remark at the birthday party of an old man. Al Sharpton's racebaiting has resulted in death. Hint: Look up Freddy's Fashion Mart. If he has any success at all, I will consider the Democratic Party to be morally bankrupt.
Amen to statehood for DC. Taxation without representation is tyranny. It's a national embarrassment that we have the last plantation right in our seat of government.
